In Radio Goftogoo’s episode of “Bedoone Khatkhordegi”, Dariush Safarnejad has viewed the Ukrainian crisis as a 30-year long problem.

He said in his interview: “After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine has witnessed many ups and downs, and this is due to the presence of the bi-polarity factor of the East and the West in Ukrainian politics.”

Safarnejad said: “During his presidency, George W. Bush had officially boasted that “nation-building” in Ukraine was one of the achievements of his foreign policies.”

The Iranian expert pointed out: “Conflict and serious political confrontation between the West and the East (that is, pro US elements and their opponents) increased in Ukraine after the 2005 “Orange Revolution” in which Viktor Yushchenko with Washington’s help became president – the third after the Soviet breakup. In 2010, Yushchenko lost the elections to his opponent Viktor Yanukovych, who had opposed the interference of the US in Ukrainian politics, only to be removed from power in the so-called “Revolution of Dignity” or the “Maidan Revolution” in 2014. He eventually fled to Russia.”

Safarnejad commenting on the current Ukrainian President, pointed out: “Volodymyr Zelenskyy is a former actor and a comedian. He is of Jewish stock and has frequently mentioned about his commitments to the Zionist ideology, which has been part of his policies for the past two years. Zelenskyy has always tried to get maximum support from the West, especially NATO for his confrontation with Russia and Russian policies.”

He further noted: “Apart from the US, Zelenskyy is requesting help from the Western Europe and wants NATO to get involved in the ongoing conflict with Russia. NATO, however, has poured cold water, and in spite of the passing of 30 years (since the Soviet breakup) Ukraine’s membership has not been decided.”

In conclusion, the Iranian expert said: “The US as a NATO member would like to enter the conflict, but not direct confrontation with Russia, although it has military bases in Eastern and Western Europe, which would be used as a leverage in the Russian-Ukrainian negotiations.”
