When asked if the Vienna talks could lead to a complete lifting of sanctions on Iran, Abbasi replied; “The United States didn’t offer an explicit solution for lifting the sanctions.”
Radio Goftogoo's "Political Dialogue" had a phone call interview with Dr. Amir Abbasi Khoshkam, the Iranian international affairs expert, and the discussion went around “Analysis of Vienna Summit and the US. and Western Countries Behavior at the Summit.”
Explaining about the Vienna Summit, Amir Abbasi Khoshkam stated; “This meeting was held following the change in the US presidency, as Trump left the White House and Biden came to power. Trump's foreign policy was based on maximum pressure on Iran, and in line with their goals, they intended to force Iran through the sanctions to negotiate with them within a few months and accept the 12 conditions set by Pompeo, but this didn’t happen.”
Emphasizing that just like Trump, Biden’s administration is pursuing the same strategic goals that Amarican authorities seek in a large scale, Amiri noted; “Criticizing sanctions against Iran, Biden’s administration took a different approach and proposed to hold negotiations. He has multifaceted viewpoints and intends to achieve his goals through negotiations.”
Abbasi then pointed out the peaceful intention of Islamic Republic of Iran in Vienna talks; “The Vienna negotiating team is the same team that could successfully come up with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2015, and they resumed talks with the same approach. Through negotiations, they intend to make a few give-and-take on a win-win basis to sort out the nuclear program.”
Abbasi Khoshkam mentioned some of the comments regarding the lifting of sanctions and said; “Given the desire of the Americans to provide specific solutions to lift the sanctions, it is not easy to remark on this issue."
“The Americans have not yet offered an explicit strategy for lifting the sanctions, and they only mentioned a few general remarks which didn’t include any details,” added Abbasi Khoshkam.
When asked if the Vienna talks could lead to a complete lifting of sanctions on Iran, the international affairs expert replied; “Vienna talks are a good start for achieving this goal. In 2015, several similar meetings were held and the two sides reached an agreement. So if there’s still a serious will to resolve the issue peacefully, the Vienna talks can be a good starting point”.
