Iran’s former diplomat says that some are after a dialogue with an enemy who’s after overthrowing us. Fortunately, the Parliament is playing its constructive role in the current round of talks and the government is not allowed to make decisions without taking them into confidence.

Iran’s senior diplomat Alireza Sheikhattar had joined our Program “Rooydad” where the latest round of Vienna talks and the possibility of a deal by the current administration was being discussed. “The negotiation teams claim that most of the misunderstandings have been solved.”

Sheikhattar said that he has not yet reviewed the Foreign Minister’s latest letter and whatever he says is according to the analysis put forward by the media. “I’ll discuss the issue according to what I’ve heard from some of my friends in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”

He said the Insurance and Banking issues are considered as one of the many problems faced by Iran. “Although these sanctions were lifted at the time of Obama, it never normalized the situation to the pre-sanction era.”

He called this particular issue the main point which was raised by the critiques of the JCPOA. “Trump not only destroyed these minimums but also added many more embargoes.”

Sheikhattar said that the new round of talks is being mediated by the Europeans and they’re obliged to bring the above-mentioned sanctions to an end. “If we’re able to trade-in our oil, the process can’t be completed in an hour or two; So we must have enough time to verify the process.”

He pointed out that Biden is not providing any assurance regarding the next administration’s compliance with the JCPOA which will result in a Trump-like decision; thus, a clause must be added to the deal in case of a guarantee.

“Just like the previous round of talks, the Americans are not ready to add such a clause to the deal.”

During the interview, Sheikhattar raised the issue that a discussion only becomes fruitful when it guarantees the dignity and long-term interests of a country.

“The US, according to its philosophy is basically against the Islamic Republic of Iran and has always stressed on this issue. They use the talks for achieving this goal too. We’re talking to an enemy who’s after overthrowing us. Fortunately, the Parliament is playing its constructive role in the current round of talks and the government is not allowed to make arbitrary decisions anymore.”
