Political analyst Hossein Afrakhteh explained the policy of the Iranian administration towards the new round of talks for the revival of the nuclear deal.
In the latest episode of our political show “Goftogooye Siasi” we discussed the JCPOA, its future, Western pressures, and Iran’s efforts for removal of the sanctions. Political Analyst Dr. Hossein Afrakhteh who had joined us in this show briefly explained the formation process of the nuclear deal and called it an agreement between Iran and the West which was backed by a resolution of the Security Council. He recalled the previous US President’s move in 2017 in leaving the deal and starting a maximum pressure policy towards Tehran. Afrakhte added that Iran also implemented some of the clauses of the deal which allowed Tehran to retreat from some of its obligations to create a balanced situation between the signatories of the deal.
Dr. Hossein Afrakhteh told our host that Iran is now proliferating its Uranium up to twenty and sixty percent, according to the clauses of the deal; “After the Biden took the office, six rounds of revival meetings were held between Tehran and the Western sides of the deal based on the assurances made by the Americans for rejoining the Nuclear Pact. The US was not included in the talks because it has left the JCPOA officially.”
He also emphasized the common and discord points between the two sides; “Iran has demanded the western parties to guarantee that the US won’t leave the deal again and remain obliged to the contract. On the other hand, the Americans are after including the missile and regional issues in the discussions; It has become a stalemate where both sides are not ready to bow out. It’s the main boiling point.”
He further explained that the one who must return to the pact is the US saying: “After rejoining the deal the Americans must pave the way for verification of their actions by Iran.”
He also emphasized that the current Iranian administration is in favor of negotiations while having some conditions whose implementation is extremely necessary. “The main axis of these conditions is the removal of all the sanctions and embargoes.”
Dr. Hossein Afrakhteh called the 29th of November as the next date of the negotiations and said that with the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs visited Tehran and at the moment bilateral meetings are taking place under the pretext of the JCPOA.
Afrakhteh said that the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is after highlighting the role of the other sides of the deal except the US saying: “The Deputy Foreign Minister Baqeri has told his French counterpart that Iran demands Paris to play a greater and more independent role from in comparison to the Americans.”
He told our host that we must wait and see that how much the Europeans will move according to the Iranian demands or at least take an independent step or a different decision from the Americans. “They can’t be trusted though!”
