Radio Goftogoo's "Political Dialogue" interviewed Alireza Taghavinia, an international affairs expert, discussing the new round of nuclear talks in Vienna for lifting sanctions.
Alireza Taqavinia noted that the challenge to the nuclear case began in 2002. Regarding the details, he said; “A terrorist group called Munafeqin, which at that time was even on the list of terrorist groups in the United States and Europe, held a press conference and showed pictures of a number of facilities, claiming that Iran is conducting secret nuclear activities in these facilities.”
He pointed to the suspension of nuclear activities at the end of the Iranian eighth administration and its ineffectiveness; “As the government realized the ineffectiveness of our nuclear activities suspension, it broke the seal of nuclear facilities and then in the ninth and tenth administrations, we witnessed some nuclear achievements. Finally, at the 11th government, the JCPOA was concluded.”
“Many hoped that with Biden coming to power, the US president would first and foremost return to the JCPOA, but now we see that almost a year has passed and no progress was made in this field,” the international affairs expert told Radio Goftgoo.
Regarding the resumption of nuclear talks in the 13th government, he said; “I am not optimistic about the outcome of these talks since the Iranian nuclear issue is not a technically difficult issue, but it is a political issue. Iran was a member of the NPT from the beginning, and according to this treaty, Iran has the right to carry out any nuclear activities, provided that it does not move towards nuclear weapons. During these few years of nuclear activity, we have not violated the orders in any way, but still the Westerners make excuses.”
Taqavinia stated that the issue of Iran's nuclear case is neither legal nor technical, but apolitical one; “The political case depends on the political will of the negotiating parties, and naturally the political will of the two parties is subject to a series of variables that do not allow the two sides to fulfillment the commitments.”
He stated that it was almost impossible for Iran to reach a tangible result in the negotiations with the West; “The history of Europe and the United States and the lobbies of some countries in the region show that the West cannot be counted on and that we can’t be optimistic about the talks.”
The international affairs expert said that the United States and Europe have never been committed to fulfil their obligations to other countries; “They acted the same towards the JCPOA, and we saw that they didn’t fulfill any of their commitments under the JCPOA. They only expected Iran to be committed to the deal.”
