In a conversation with “Bedoone Khat-Khordegi” program of Radio Goftogoo Iran’s Ambassador to Russia Jalal Kazemi told our host that in the year 2001 we signed a 10-year deal with Russia which was also ratified by the Parliament of the Islamic Republic of Iran. “This deal was extended in 2011 and last year according to some of its clauses, it was further extended for five years automatically.”

He added that during the ex-Foreign Minister’s visit to Moscow, the topic of a diversified agreement between the two sides was raised which was later known as the 20-year deal.

Mr. Ambassador added that the current deal was narrated 20 years ago so it’s not up to our expectations anymore; therefore, both the leaderships are in favor of an updated version of this deal.

“One of the interesting points of this possible deal is that the Foreign Ministers of Iran and Russia had agreed that draft of this treaty will be prepared by Iran which is a privilege for Tehran. The Russians will also have their say on the draft. “Whenever necessary, a joint commission will also take place for mutual understanding.”

Jalali stated that the Cooperation agreement between the two countries won’t be signed during the forthcoming trip of Mr. President to Moscow. “Some internal sources are spreading biased news regarding this deal, but [I clearly state], no deal is going to be signed during this trip. The Russian side is still reviewing the draft; if the differences could be addressed swiftly, an agreement is possible otherwise, a joint commission will meet accordingly.”

Iran’s Ambassador to Moscow further explained the clauses of the agreement saying: “This deal will be more inclusive and updated compared to the previous one. The economic dimensions have been transcribed in a much better form. Iran believes that both the cultural and the economic fields must be addressed seriously in our cooperation.”

He added that for cooperation to be stable in the fields of politics, defense, and security, cultural and economic relations must be intensified between the two nations. “This deal addresses all these topics.” He stated.

Responding to controversies regarding the possible agreement between Iran and Russia Kazem Jalali affirmed that this agreement is not confidential at all and doesn’t include any classified clauses. “This agreement must be studied by the Parliament and whatever be the decision, it will be published in the media. The Russian Parliament will also check the deal.”
He emphasized that the media sources must convey the correct news in detail. “Unfortunately, false narratives of the stories are created, and then analyzes are made on this disinformation.”
