"Americans’ ideal government features one that can align with the policies of this country in Iraq," explained Shakibaei on Radio Goftogoo. “Americans now see al-Kadhimi's government as a desirable state.”
Radio Goftogoo's "Political Dialogue" had an interview with Mehdi Shakibaei, the Iranian senior analyst on West Asia affairs, discussing recent changes in Iraq with the focus on the country's elections.
Mehdi Shakibaei mentioned that today Iraq political scene is mainly affected by what happened more than a year ago; “At that time, Mustafa al-Kadhimi replaced the country’s former Prime Minister ‘Adel al-Mahdi’ due existing problems and inefficiencies. Al-Kadhimi's special mission was to hold elections to determine Iraq's new political arrangement in parliament, as well as in prime ministership.”
He called the fight against corruption and the solution to peoples’ livelihood problems in Iraq as one of the most important missions of Al-Kadhimi over the past year; “Al-Kadhimi’s government was mostly formed under the shadow of Americans terroristic actions in assassinating Martyr al-Muhandis and Qasem Soleimani. Accordingly changes in Iraq took a different form.”
In his interview with Radio Goftogoo, this senior analyst referred to the Iraqi parliament's decision to withdraw the occupying forces, especially the United States; “All changes in Iraq were affected by this decision. The United States entered Iraq claiming democracy, but took exactly the opposite direction, and now Iraq is desperate.”
“The Americans, along with their allies, especially the British, attempted to stay in Iraq for the past year by managing Iraqi public opinion and political groups. They intended that, if they were forced to leave Iraq according to public request, they do it in a dignified manner,” he added.
"Iraq’s currents is mainly influenced by the US effort to stay in Iraq. Iraq’s elections will be held in three months,” Shakibaei said.
“Americans’ ideal government features one that can align with the policies of this country in Iraq. Americans now see al-Kadhimi's government as a desirable state that can organize their status in Iraq.
From the Americans' perspective, this arrangement guarantees their long-term presence in Iraq in the form of a security agreement or pact.”
The Iranian senior analyst on West Asia affairs also pointed to the controversy in Iraq over the US withdrawal; “The Iraqi prime minister will pay a visit to Washington and will hold talks with the US President, Joe Biden. Both Biden and Kadhimi are very hopeful about the results of this visit. Although at the beginning of his job as Iraq’s Prime Minister, Mustafa Kadhimi announced that he had no plans to remain in this position, being half through his mission he decided to present himself as one of the main candidates for this post.”
