"Morning and Dialogue" radio program had a phone call interview with Dr. Shahin Ghasemi, a faculty member of Iran University of Medical Sciences regarding the Omicron variant.

Shahin Ghasemi referred to the Omicron epidemic and at the same time expressed; “Other variants of Covid-19 haven’t been yet eliminated.”

Regarding the quarantine of patients affected by Omicron, he said; “In some articles, the lifespan of an Omicron for the patient is five days to a week. It is best for people to be quarantined for two weeks since the beginning of the disease and to have a PCR test after the disease is over.”

The faculty member of Iran University of Medical Sciences noted; “Let's not forget, and we must keep in mind that the patient may not be affected by Omicron and not delta. Therefore, we generally recommend that infected individuals be quarantined for up to 10 days and isolate themselves so that if there are variants other than Omicron, others will not be infected.”

There is no red line for separating Covid-19 variants

Ghasemi spoke of how to diagnose other variants of Covid-19; “The pattern of treatment is not different from other variants, and for doctors, lung involvement and the risk to life are important to the patient. Therefore, there is no red line to separate the types of Corona variants.”

“We may think that if we have symptoms similar to the common cold, but our lungs are healthy, then it is definitely not delta, but it’s not true,” noted Ghasemi said in his interview with Radio Goftogoo.

He stressed; “Anyone who shows symptoms of a cold should be considered as a Covid-19 patient and see a doctor. The doctor will definitely take action on the involvement of the lungs and we will give the necessary advice to the people and we will do it.”

The faculty member of Iran University of Medical Sciences added; “Omicron symptoms are very similar to the common cold. Some of them may have allergies, and these two issues should be distinguished by a doctor and a specialist. Because it is possible for others to get into trouble by misdiagnosing. Especially in the Omicron variant, the rate of transmission is several times higher than other variants, and if cardiovascular and renal patients are affected by these variants, they will be at risk. It seems that over the last few days, the death toll has tripled.”

He forbade people from self-medication, saying that the latest scientific information is updated every two weeks and that people should not self-medicate based on previous treatments that existed, since medications recommended a month ago may no longer be recommended.

*Completion of vaccination is the most important factor for cutting coronavirus transmission cycle

Ghasemi mentioned the completion of vaccination as the most important factor for cutting the corona virus transmission cycle and said; “Even in the Omicron variant, which has a high mutation, we actually see more people in hospitals being hospitalized and were either not vaccinated or not fully vaccinated.

He continued; “We urge people to take the third dose and use a mask and follow health protocols.”

When asked which vaccine is more effective, the faculty member of Iran University of Medical Sciences said; “The percentage of prevention and effectiveness of different vaccines are close to each other and insisting that we get this vaccine or another is wrong.
